In 60 seconds: One week, seven stories that refused to stay small: a pilot's cockpit attack that keeps revealing darker layers, Brazil voting today under a security cloud, a secret White House war council, a botched execution that froze Tennessee's death row, a $5 billion IPO, a jobs report that broke the Fed's plans, and France's schools in revolt. Here's the week, hottest first.
- The Flydubai cockpit attack saga deepened: Oman had banned the co-pilot from flying over extremist views — and the airline hired him anyway.
- Brazil votes today after the U.S. and Australia suspended diplomatic operations over an uncorroborated threat; polls show a dead heat.
- Trump's top aides secretly met at Camp David on the Iran war and Yemen — and the White House won't say what they decided.
- Tennessee cancelled all remaining 2026 executions after the botched execution of Christa Pike; the attorney general wants answers.
- Plus: a $5B Nvidia-backed IPO, a 29,000-jobs report that killed rate-hike odds, and 5,000 arrests in France's student revolt.
Every Sunday, we pull the week's chaos into one place — the seven stories that actually moved the needle, ranked by how much they mattered, each with a one-line summary and a link to our full coverage. This was the week of September 27 to October 3.
1. The cockpit attack that keeps getting darker
The Flydubai FZ1073 saga — the mid-air stabbing attack on a Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight — produced its most damning revelation yet: Omani authorities had banned co-pilot Hamam al-Hammami from flying over concerns he'd adopted radical ideological views — and Flydubai hired him anyway, about a year ago. CNN reported he was removed from Oman Air over extremist views; ABC found extremist materials allegedly in his possession as a trainee; his deleted social accounts showed video of Israeli planes ending with photos of ex-al-Qaeda leader al-Zawahiri. Netanyahu called it “Islamist radicalization” and warned “whoever sent him will pay a heavy price.” An Israeli official told AP there's still no evidence linking him to Iran — directly contradicting Trump's “yes.”
2. Brazil votes today — under a security cloud
The U.S. and Australia suspended consular and embassy operations 48 hours before election day, citing security concerns — and Brazilian federal police raids found no corroborating evidence, no suspects, nothing. Datafolha's final polls show a dead heat: Lula 42, Flávio Bolsonaro 38, with a runoff simulation at a technical tie. The final TV Globo debate was scrapped. Brazil elects its president today; if nobody clears 50%, the runoff is Oct. 25.
3. The secret Camp David war council
Axios revealed that Trump's top aides secretly met at Camp David on the Iran war and Yemen — Vance chairing, Trump in the room, Rubio, Hegseth, Witkoff, Ratcliffe and Caine all present. One source's summary: “things were decided, or at least deeply discussed.” The White House won't say what. Trump says the war ends “very soon,” “probably” after the midterms. Meanwhile Reuters reports Saudi Arabia is weighing a 100,000-troop offensive at Bab el-Mandeb within weeks — and the U.S. has twice refused airstrikes.
4. Tennessee's death row freezes
After the botched execution of Christa Pike — two doses of pentobarbital failed, she survived 40+ minutes and was hospitalized — Tennessee's attorney general backed an investigation and the governor formally cancelled every remaining 2026 execution, including Gary Wayne Sutton's December date. Pike's lawyers say at least seven needles were used in her left arm alone. It's the state's second failed execution of 2026.
5. The $5 billion IPO that tripled in two months
Nvidia-backed data-center firm Firmus priced a $5 billion IPO in Australia — the country's second-largest ever — at a $30.6 billion valuation, nearly triple its $10.5 billion August round. Morningstar called it the “hallmarks of a boom phase.” The proceeds buy Nvidia GPUs for a 360MW campus in Batam. Bookbuild runs Oct. 6–9; ASX debut Oct. 23.
6. 29,000 jobs broke the Fed's rate-hike plan
September payrolls came in at just 29,000 against ~90,000 expected, unemployment ticked to 4.2%, and prior months were revised down 60,000 combined. CME FedWatch odds of an Oct. 28 hike collapsed from 70% to the teens. The 10-year hit 5.18%. Wall Street cheered; gold hit $4,223.
7. France's schools in revolt
Some 400 schools shut on Friday and ~5,000 people — most teenagers — have been arrested since Monday as France's lycée protests turned violent: fences torched in Pantin, tear gas in Strasbourg, fireworks fired at police in Marseille, petrol sprayed at a teacher in La Ciotat. Sixty-five education staff were injured. A teachers' strike and mega-demonstrations are called for Tuesday, Oct. 6.
What to watch next week
Brazil's first-round results land tonight. France's Tuesday could be the biggest street day of the year. The Firmus bookbuild opens Monday. And India faces Uruguay in Kolkata on Oct. 6 after last night's historic 4-0 lesson from Brazil. We'll be on all of it — see you in the hourly feed.
