In 60 seconds: Kayem Foods has recalled nearly 1.6 million pounds of ready-to-eat hot dogs, bacon, deli meats and sausages after a warehouse cooler failure left them at unsafe temperatures. The USDA put the recall in its highest-risk category. Check the USDA mark on your package for EST. M/P 7839, EST. P 20935A or EST. M 9520 — if it's there, don't eat it.
- Kayem Foods Inc. recalled 1,584,361 pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products — hot dogs, bacon, ham, bologna, kielbasa, chicken sausages and more — made between March 31 and October 7, 2026.
- The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service classified it a Class I recall, its highest risk level. No illnesses have been confirmed so far.
- The problem surfaced October 1, when a customer complained products arrived warm; Kayem traced it to a warehouse cooler that wouldn't hold temperature.
- The recall covers eight brand names — Kayem, Al Fresco, Triple M, McKenzie, Deutschmacher, Jordan's, Essem and Winnisimmet St. Butchery — shipped nationwide and to Hong Kong.
- Some products have use-by dates as late as February 2027, so recalled items may still be sitting in your fridge or freezer right now.
If you've got hot dogs, bacon or deli meat in your fridge right now, this one's worth two minutes of your time. One of the biggest meat recalls of the year just landed — and the products are the kind most American households buy without a second thought.
Here's the thing: these are ready-to-eat products. You don't cook them to kill off bacteria. That's exactly why the USDA took this so seriously.
What happened
On October 17, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced that Kayem Foods Inc., based in Chelsea, Massachusetts, was recalling approximately 1,584,361 pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products. The agency placed the recall — numbered 026-2026 — in Class I, which is the highest-risk category a food recall can get.
The trail back to the problem started October 1, when a retail customer complained that Kayem products felt warm when they were delivered. Kayem investigated and found that a warehouse cooler holding a range of its ready-to-eat products had experienced temperature deviations. Kayem has since called the recall voluntary, said the cooling problem is fixed, and said it's contacting every wholesale and retail customer directly with instructions to pull the products.
Latest verified facts
Here is exactly what's covered, straight from the USDA:
- The products: hot dogs, frankfurters, bacon, bologna, cocktail franks, kielbasa, bratwurst, slow-smoked beef brisket, corned beef, Polish loaf, chicken sausage, ham, liverwurst, chicken meatballs and turkey breast — 68 items in all, produced between about March 31 and October 7, 2026.

- How to check: look for the USDA mark of inspection on the label. Products carrying EST. M/P 7839, EST. P 20935A or EST. M 9520 inside that mark are subject to the recall. FSIS has also posted the full list of product labels and UPCs.
- Where they went: stores and food-service locations nationwide, plus Hong Kong. They were stored and shipped between June 7 and October 14, 2026.
- Illnesses: none confirmed as of the agency's announcement.

Why it matters
Temperature abuse is one of the nastiest problems in food safety. When perishable food sits in what's called the "danger zone" — too warm for too long — bacteria that cause foodborne illness get hours of extra time to multiply. And because these products are eaten as-is, there's no cooking step to save you.
The groups most at risk from listeria and similar pathogens are pregnant people, newborns, adults 65 and older, and anyone with a weakened immune system. For them, this isn't a shrug-it-off situation — symptoms like fever warrant a call to a health care provider.
And honestly, the scariest detail in the whole announcement might be the shelf life. Use-by dates stretch into February 2027. Products bought weeks or months ago could still be in your freezer, quietly waiting.
Impact on the USA and the world
This is a national recall with real scale — 1.58 million pounds across eight brands, sold everywhere from Walmart to Market Basket. Ready-to-eat meats are a staple in school lunches, office fridges and weekend cookouts, so the number of households that could have a package is enormous.
It's also the second big consumer recall making headlines this week — our earlier coverage of the 4.3-million-tube toothpaste recall is still trending — and it's a reminder that "check the label" is becoming a weekly chore for American shoppers.

What happens next
The USDA says it's concerned some of these products are already in people's refrigerators — and given the long use-by dates, that concern is well founded. Here's what to do:
- Check your fridge and freezer for Kayem-family products and compare the establishment number against the three numbers above.
- Do not eat anything that matches. Throw it away or return it to the store.
- Check the FSIS product list for your specific UPC if you're unsure.
Kayem says the cooler problem is corrected and it's working directly with retailers to pull remaining stock. The USDA's electronic consumer-complaint system is open around the clock if you spot a problem with any meat, poultry or egg product. This is a developing consumer story — if the recall expands, we'll update.
