October 2026 Movie Releases: Digger, Clayface, Street Fighter and the Halloween Horror Lineup

Key Takeaways
  • October 2026's theatrical slate is stacked: Digger (Oct 2), Other Mommy (Oct 9), Street Fighter and Whalefall (Oct 16), and DC's Clayface (Oct 23) lead the month.
  • Horror fans get the richest lineup of the year — Clayface is DC Studios' first R-rated body-horror film, joined by Other Mommy, Crawlers and Shudder's V/H/S/Mixtape.
  • Studios are chasing Halloween weekend on purpose: Clayface was deliberately moved from September 11 to October 23.
  • Indian audiences get Drishyam: The Conclusion (Oct 2) and Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 (Oct 15); Pan's Labyrinth returns to theatres for its 20th anniversary on October 9.
  • Theatrical dates can shift — check local listings before buying tickets.

October is my favourite month to be a moviegoer, and the October 2026 movie releases are giving us the busiest slate in years: a Tom Cruise prestige comedy to open, horror timed for Halloween weekend, a Street Fighter reboot, and DC's strangest swing yet.

Every date below is checked against studio announcements and the trades. Hollywood first, then the big Indian releases.

The horror lineup is the real story

Horror is the month's biggest bet. It opens October 9 with Other Mommy: Jessica Chastain plays a dual role in Rob Savage's adaptation of Josh Malerman's Incidents Around the House, about a young girl whose mother is replaced by an entity that looks exactly like her. James Wan is producing through his Blumhouse-Atomic Monster banner, which tells you the sound design alone will be worth the ticket.

The headline horror event is Clayface on October 23. DC Studios and Warner Bros. moved the film from September 11 to land in the Halloween corridor. James Watkins directs from a Mike Flanagan screenplay: actor Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries) gets an experimental treatment for his destroyed face that turns his body into living clay — reportedly R-rated body horror in the Cronenberg vein, with Naomi Ackie and Max Minghella.

Smaller horror fans aren't left out: Crawlers (October 16) unleashes venomous spiders on an apartment complex, Shudder adds V/H/S/Mixtape (Oct 9) and Hallowarrior (Oct 16), and del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth returns in 4K for its 20th anniversary.

The big studio bets: Digger, Street Fighter, The Social Reckoning

Digger (October 2) is the month's most intriguing swing: Iñárritu directing Tom Cruise in a satirical black comedy about "the most powerful man in the world" racing to prove he's humanity's saviour before his own disaster destroys everything. Shot in VistaVision with Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg and Jesse Plemons, it has early reviews already invoking Dr. Strangelove — Warner Bros. is clearly gunning for awards season.

Mid-month belongs to Street Fighter (October 16). Paramount and Legendary reboot Capcom's franchise: Kitao Sakurai's 1993-set film sends Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken (Noah Centineo) into the World Warrior Tournament, where a conspiracy unfolds underneath. The ensemble is wild — Callina Liang as Chun-Li, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Jason Momoa as Blanka, 50 Cent as Balrog, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Roman Reigns as Akuma. If you've been burned by video game adaptations before — and honestly, who hasn't — this one has a comedy-savvy director and a cast clearly having fun.

Sorkin's The Social Reckoning (October 9, Sony) revisits The Social Network's Facebook story through the Facebook Files and whistleblower Frances Haugen, with Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White and Jeremy Strong. It shares the date with Everest drama Tenzing; the survival thriller Whalefall (October 16) stars Austin Abrams and Josh Brolin in Daniel Kraus's sperm-whale survival story.

The Indian slate and what else is coming

For Indian audiences, October is loaded. Drishyam: The Conclusion (October 2) ends Ajay Devgn's thriller franchise with Tabu and Shriya Saran returning. Udta Teer (October 9) pairs Ayushmann Khurrana with Sara Ali Khan, and Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 (Oct 15) brings Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan and Mohanlal. Rajkummar Rao's Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam is listed for Oct 16.

October 23 packs Laika's animated Wildwood alongside Clayface, with Klara and the Sun also listed — treat that as unconfirmed. The Halloween corridor closes October 30 with the slasher Stiletto currently slated.

How I'd plan the month

If I were booking, I'd take Digger on opening weekend and Clayface on Halloween weekend — the two likeliest to own the conversation. One caveat: October dates move. Everything here is verified as of September 29, but check your theatre's listings first.
